Paul Norbury has been closely associated with Japan and Asian Studies as publisher, editor and author since the early 1970s, principally through his various imprints – Paul Norbury Publications, Japan Library, Global Oriental and, most recently, Renaissance Books, now part of AUP. In 2003, he received the Japan Society Award, in 2011 Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun and in 2013 the Republic of Yakutia’s Order of Civic Virtue (Russian Federation) for publication of the English edition of their historic epic poem Olonkho, proclaimed by UNESCO in 2015 as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In 2021 Paul celebrated 50 years of publishing on Japan.
