AI Policy

AI Policy of Amsterdam University Press and Central European University Press

Amsterdam University Press (AUP) and Central European University Press (CEUP) acknowledge the increasing use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in research and scholarly writing. To maintain academic integrity and ethical standards, we provide the following guidelines for authors, editors and peer reviewers using AI in their manuscripts:

AI Usage by Authors

  1. Transparency and Disclosure of AI tools: Authors must disclose the use of AI tools in their manuscript, specifying the type of tools used, the date of use and how they were employed. This includes AI assistance for brainstorming, proofreading, structural and stylistic feedback, translation assistance, data analysis and visualization.

  2. Authorship and Accountability: AI tools cannot be listed as an author on any AUP and CEUP publication. Authorship is limited to individuals who have made significant intellectual contributions to the work. Authors are responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their work, including any AI-generated content.
  3. AI as a Source: Manuscripts must not cite chatbots or AI-generated content as primary or secondary sources. The content produced by Large Language Models (LLMs) lacks reproducibility, traceability, and may inadvertently contain third-party material without proper attribution.

  4. Ethical Use of AI: AI must be used ethically and responsibly, avoiding plagiarism, copyright infringement, data fabrication, or misrepresentation of research. Authors must ensure AI-generated content does not violate copyright and that appropriate citations are provided.

  5. Data Privacy and Consent: Authors must comply with data privacy regulations when using AI tools that process data, especially sensitive or personal data. Necessary consents must be obtained, and data confidentiality must be maintained.

  6. Quality Control and Verification: Authors are responsible for verifying the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated content. Rigorous quality control and human oversight are essential to meet scholarly publishing standards.

AI Use by Peer Reviewers

  • Peer reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts or project proposals, including any associated files, images or information, into publicly available AI tools due to confidentiality and copyright issues, as well as security risks.
  • Generative AI may only be used to enhance the clarity and quality of language in the review. Peer reviewers remain fully responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of their reviews.

AI-Generated Images

  • The rapidly evolving field of generative AI image creation raises complex legal, copyright, and research integrity challenges. Due to these legal uncertainties, AUP and CEUP do not permit their use in submitted manuscripts.

Additional Considerations

  • AUP and CEUP reserve the right to request additional information or clarification on AI usage in submitted manuscripts.
  • Non-disclosure of AI usage or unethical AI practices may result in manuscript rejection or retraction of published work.

Key Points

  • AI can be a valuable tool for research and writing, but it cannot replace human judgment and accountability.
  • Transparency and ethical considerations are paramount when using AI in scholarly publishing.
  • AUP and CEUP encourage responsible AI use that complements human expertise and advances knowledge.
